What is the National Approach?

The National Approach to LGBT Inclusive Education in Scotland sets out that LGBT-related learning content should be included naturally and meaningfully within the school curriculum, differentiated for the age and stage of learners. This helps to address prejudice and bullying while ensuring that all children and young people can see themselves, their families, and the world around them reflected in their learning at school. The short video below explains what this can look like and why it is important.

Implementation and Evaluation Toolkit

From 2021, Scotland will be advancing LGBT Inclusive Education in all schools through a phased implementation approach.

The lgbteducation.scot platform supports teachers to do this through the provision of professional learning opportunities, the availability of cross-curricular teaching resources.

This Toolkit will support schools to effectively embed LGBT and equalities themes across curriculum through a structured pathway, and provide opportunities for self-evaluation.

Jenny Gilruth MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills

“I was proud to support the formation of the LGBTI Inclusive Education Working Group back in 2017. I am even more proud to see the real difference these world-leading resources and teacher training modules are now making in our schools. Through greater understanding and appreciation of LGBT issues, histories and identities, current and future generations of young people are being supported to reach their full potential; form happy and healthy relationships; and flourish in a diverse and inclusive society. This can only be good for our country.

I am grateful to our dedicated educational professionals for their hard work in continuing to develop their own knowledge: knowledge they are using to provide relevant and engaging learning experiences for our children and young people while developing their understanding of what it is to be an inclusive and respectful person.

As we continue our work to embed LGBT Inclusive Education in the Scottish curriculum, I know we are ensuring our children and young people have the best possible start in life.

Inclusive Education helps us to sustain and advance Scotland’s reputation as a proud, welcoming nation to everyone – no matter who they are.”

Curriculum Resources
