The Scottish Government has published National Guidance on LGBT Inclusive Education. This fulfils a recommendation made by various education stakeholders in the Report to the Scottish Ministers, 2018.

“Develop National Guidance which clearly states expectations regarding LGBT Inclusive Education and signposts teachers in any school in Scotland towards supporting resources.” Recommendation 7

Guidance on LGBT Inclusive Education

This guidance from the Scottish Government sets out the ‘National Approach to LGBT Inclusive Education’ and expectations for school and education settings.

 

It includes content relating to professional learning, what LGBT Inclusive Education should look like in practice, and how it connects to broader education frameworks in Scotland.

 

For teachers and education staff, senior leaders, and Directors of Education in Scotland.

What should schools and education settings do?

The guidance sets out that schools and education settings should integrate LGBT Inclusive Education within the core curriculum in line with the national approach. Professional learning and resources to support this are already available.

 

Schools and education settings can begin their engagement with this work by participating in the two-stage professional learning pathway. 

 

Supporting resources and professional learning can be accessed by all teachers and school staff below.

CPD Pathway

The first engagement point is completion of the national professional learning pathway. The Stage 1 E-Learning module is freely available to all teachers in Scotland. Stage 2 can be booked for your setting upon completion. This course should be completed by primary and secondary school teachers in Scotland.

Supporting Resources

There are supporting resources available to implement the national guidance in practice. These include curriculum materials and teaching and learning resources differentiated for the age and stage of learners. Staff can explore curriculum materials for examples as to how the national approach can be taken forward.
